About this hymn

Martin Luther wrote both the words and the tune around 1529, working from Psalm 46. It became the anthem of the Reformation and was sung at Luther's funeral. The bass line is one of the most satisfying in the hymnal, and the tenor moves more than you expect, so give the inner parts a listen before you pick one.
