About this hymn
Henry Lyte wrote this in 1847, weeks before his death, drawing on the Emmaus road: 'Abide with us, for it is toward evening.' William Monk's tune, Eventide, came in 1861. It moves slowly and the parts sit close together, which makes it a gentle first hymn for an alto or a tenor.
