About this hymn

John Newton wrote Amazing Grace in 1772 for a New Year's Day sermon in Olney, England. He had been a slave ship captain before his conversion, and the hymn is his own testimony. The tune most churches sing, New Britain, was paired with it in America in 1835. The alto part is nearly all long notes, so it is a kind place to begin.
