About this hymn

Horatio Spafford wrote these words in 1873 after his four daughters were lost at sea, reportedly as his ship passed the place they died. Philip Bliss set it in 1876. The refrain is a round: the bass and tenor answer 'it is well' after the sopranos. It is the most rewarding lower-part refrain in the hymnal.
