About this hymn

Samuel Trevor Francis wrote this in 1875, reportedly after a night on Hungerford Bridge when he had considered throwing himself into the Thames. Thomas Williams's Welsh tune Ebenezer is in a minor key and rolls like the sea the words describe. The tenor part is the one to try; it carries much of the weight.
